Mommy's Birthday

We had never thrown a party for my mom’s birthday before. My sister and I decided to put together a Pink, red, birdie, theme for her. The cake in the middle picture was done by me. I am very proud of this cake. It was some work but I pushed myself beyond my expertise.
We had a dessert buffet that I put together. I baked chocolate chips cookies, mini cheesecakes, chocolate covered strawberries, brownies, cupcakes and sugar cookies. It was beautifully displayed on red plates and platters most of them from Target.

I made pink lemonade, and fruit punch and added strawberries to the drink dispenser. The drink dispensers were a steal from Wal-Mart. For food we had an array of sandwiches with chips.

The centerpieces were made from branches and tissue paper flowers. We affixed them to the branches with glue dots. We had pink table covers and red plates and cups. .We also hung pink and red hearts and tissue pom-poms from the ceiling.

Beach Themed Bridal Shower Cake

I like this cake because it allowed me to be more creative. I had never worked with gumpaste before so I was experimenting. I used ½ gumpaste and ½ fondant mixture. I followed a tutorial online for the flowers. I painted them after with pearl dust but it didn’t work, then I added water to the pearl dust and that was not a good idea either. It did the trick but it made the flower soggy and droopy. For the surfboard I used a cookie cutter. The beach ball and the bathing suit are my favorite pieces.

21st Birthday!

My sister turned 21 this past October (I’m sooooo behind on blogging!) We hadn’t made a big deal of her birthday for a while; don’t know why we just hadn’t. This year we tried to do something a little more special. I don’t get paid until the 10th of every month (only bad thing ‘bout working for a school district) so usually she doesn’t get gifts until then. Her birthday is the 3rd. So yes, we’re often late. This year we were able to get gifts the same day for her to open. She felt extra special and she got some nice gifts.

Since her day was going to be special well then so should her cake right? Right! So I looked on CakeCentral where I like to go for inspiration, and fell in love with a cake that was black and green. I went with a lighter green and incorporated a soft pink. The bottom tier is 4 layers of 10” rounds filled with strawberries, and the top 2 layers of 8” rounds filled with cream cheese and strawberries.

The bottom tier was covered in green marshmallow fondant and decorated with pink and black balls pressed onto the sides of the cake. I wanted them to look more like pearls but ended up looking like M&Ms J The top tier was covered in black marshmallow fondant and decorated with different size circles of fondant. I used a Wilton Impression Mat (Happy Birthday) to make an impression on the top of the tier. I finished it off with a 21 made out of pink fondant and her name, Diana, spelled out with pink and black fondant. The board was also covered with green fondant and a black ribbon border around it.

I really love this cake. It was sooo much work but sooo worth it. Enjoy leave me some comments, I love to hear from you!!!

Some more Disney

This cake was fairly small cake, nothing fancy, a single tier, yes some decoration but nothing off the wall. Well for being such a small cake it came with BIG problems. For starters the fondant didn't come out the yellow I wanted, and the fondant was tooooooo soft. I had to keep going back to add more sugar, which set me back some time, but it was all worth it. I love how it came out!

The pot originally had a lid, but since the fondant gave me so much trouble it didn't make it. I think it looks way better without the lid. The pot itself was carved from two eight inch round cakes. The cake was cold so it made it easier to carve. Once carved I covered it with strawberry jam, and then with a think layer of brown marshmallow fondant. I added a rim on the top and bottom made from fondant. The Wilton Alphabet Cut-Outs were used to write "hunny" just the way Pooh writes it. The layer of yellow fondant to look like honey was just rolled out as messy as possible. The honey was the last thing I added.

The round cake was a 10'' round cake filled with strawberries, which is my favorite if you hadn't guessed by now, covered with blue fondant. Again the fondant was tricky and laborious. I used the Wilton Cut-Outs three piece set to cut out the flowers. I also used the round three piece set to make the balls around the cake. I used the cutter to sort of get the same size balls.

The pooh face was the easiest part to do. Using the Pooh Cake Pan and Wilton Candy melts in white, and their Pooh Collection Icing Color pack. I died the white candy melts using the Pooh Color set, i dyed some yellow, and some black. I then used a piping bag to pipe in the black chocolate on the facial features like eyes, mouth, nose and eyebrows. Then once that dried a bit I piped over and filled in just the face portion of the cake pan with the yellow, popped in the refrigerator and 10 min later I had a Pooh chocolate face. I then just affixed it to the cake and the cake was finished.

Hope you enjoyed the cake! XOXO

Mickey Mouse Cake

Who doesn't love Mickey? Mickey Mouse is one of the most iconic cartoon characters of all time. I recieved a request for a Mickey cake, and well, I have no drawing skills. So, drawing Mickey's face was out of the question. I researched cake on Cakecentral, one of my favorite spots for inspiration.

This cake was inspired by some of the pictures from wonderful bakers who are kind enough to share their creations. The Mickey cake was a two tiered stacked cake. All decorations were made from marshmallow fondant and colored with Wilton color. I also cut out the stars using Wilton's star shaped cookie cutters. The Mickey head was baked using a sports ball 3D pan also from Wilton.
This yummy cake was filled with strawberries on one layer and peaches on the other. The strawberry layer was lemon cake, and peach was just white cake. It was really fun to make but lots of work. Thanks Nadine for helping me :)

Baby Shower

I recently helped my uncle plan his wife’s baby shower. I was in charge of the cake, invitations, and the decorations. I had several ideas and craft projects in mind for the shower and was delighted that he gave me all the creative freedom. I had to pull off all the projects on a very tight budget. Originally, the budget was $100.00, which had to be bumped up to $140.00. I know that it sounds impossible and it nearly was but lucky for me I had many of the materials already on hand.

The baby shower was a small event and it was co-ed. My uncle and his wife are expecting a baby girl, however she did not want an all pink baby shower. I had purchased some thank you cards in a shape of a baby’s bottle. These would be perfect. They have polka dots in yellow, green, pink, and purple. The invitation set the theme for the shower. It would be a baby bottle theme. They invitations are so cute but I had to think of something to cover up the thank you.

To make the invitations I used the Baby Bottle Thank You cards purchased at Wal-Mart. They are blank in the inside. I used a round 1 ¼” circle whole punch and a 2” scalloped circle punch to cut out circles in the matching colors of yellow, green, pink, and purple. I then took the 1 ¼” circle I whole punched and punched it again with a Martha Stewart safety pin punch. I really loved the way they came out. To jazz it up a little bit I added a self-adhesive pearl.

Since the cards are blank I printed the invite information on vellum paper and affixed it to the inside with brads in coordinating colors.

The inside read:
A Baby Girl is On Her Way,

Join us for her Mommy's Special Day!
Date:

Time:

Address:

The centerpieces were also part of the bottle theme. I bought size 1 Pampers Swaddler's the big box with 92 diapers. I used every single last one and if money wasn't tight I would have used two. I just liked how the diaper bottles looked with more diapers to a layer. I also bought washcloths at Wal-Mart. and used those to cover the diaper on top that makes the pacifier and also to make a the the cap for the bottle. There is three layers each with six diapers rolled up and rubber banned together. To cover the rubber bands I used ribbon in coordinating colors that I bought at Michael's. I made five of these in about 30 minutes very easy to make.

The Wreaths:

I used 14 diapers and a floral wreath that I bought at the Dollar Tree :). I fastened them with rubber bands and cover the rubber bands with bows of ribbon. I also attached huge pacifiers and rattles that I had used for my sisters baby shower almost a year ago. I'm so glad I had some of her stuff still to use because it saved on the budget. I used tulle to make a bow on top and also to add something to hang it by. I made two wreaths to hang on two huge trees that framed the outdoor space where the shower took place.

For each guests that arrived we would pin with these beauties. I bought the bottles, clothespins and safety pins from Michael's, the rattles I already had as well as the baby feet and baby hands. I used a glue gun to affix the pin to the back of the feet and hands. I also used a glue gun to attach the bows i made and then to attach the bottles, rattles, and safety pins to the bows. These are my favorite craft items that i made for this shower. They were so cute and everyone loved them.

For the Mommy to be I made this ribbon..Well I actually finished it. My sister was originally the one who was suppose to wear the pin but since i was busy with all the details of her shower I never finished it. I stamped a piece of paper with the mommy silhouette and also a Mommy To Be stamp I had purchased at Michael's at the Dollar Bins. I had purchased the buttons on orientaltrading.com. For the little sister I made a special button as well. I added confetti hands and feet stamped a scalloped piece of paper with a stamp of a bottle and added a sticker that said Sister. I embellished them with some of the items I had purchased at Michael's.

Now for the cake. This cake is my first attempt at carving and by far the biggest cake I have ever done. It took lots of batter, strawberries, lemonade cans (concentrate juice), and whipped cream (stabilized from Smart and Final). I baked about 8 10" cakes and 3 6" cakes. The 6" cakes were for the pacifier and the bottle cap parts. I cut all cakes in half and stacked them on their sides with strawberries and whipped cream for the middle. The cake was DELICIOUS. It has been the best cake I have ever made!!! It was lemon which got its flavor from the concentrate juice I replaced it for some of the water. I finished the cake with polka dots, just like the invitation. I wanted to recreate the invitation and I think I succeed the cake was a hit at the shower.

Another element that was inspired by the invitations was the baby bottle cookies. They are my usual sugar cookies. Iced with white Royal Icing for the bottle part, the cap was in iced in green, and the pacifier in a "ivoryish" color. Once the cookies dried (about 2 hours) I added the polka dots in the same colors as the invitation. I then wrapped them up and added a cute bow. I used these pails I bought at Target. I love Target they always have some great stuff. The cookies were also a hit!

The planning of this shower was a little stressful because of the budget and I only had a couple of weeks for planning, but it was also fun to plan and I am very pleased with how everything came out. I have s couple of baby showers coming up so keep on reading for some new ideas and fun stuff.

Birthday Cakes

I have been baking quite a few birthday cakes this month and I wanted to share some of the pictures with you. I wish I had more time to photograph all the cakes I have done but sometimes I am in such a time crunch to finish them that I forget to take pictures of all of them. In the future I also plan to do more of a tutorial style posts so stay tuned for those.

This cake was baked for a surprise party for Aracely, a very dear friend of mine. Her sister is one of my top customers J The cake she requested was a Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Cake. It got rave reviews from the guests at the party. Its three layers of cake and two layers of mint chocolate chip ice cream. The cake also has mini chocolate chips mixed with Andes mint chocolate candies that I processed in the food processor. I used them to garnish the cake. I wrote Happy Birthday Aracely on it with a light minty green frosting just before they picked it up.

This cake was for Aracely’s brother. They have birthdays in the same month. It was a chocolate cake with fresh strawberry cheesecake filling. I used strawberry glaze and fresh strawberries to garnish the cake. It has a shell border at the bottom of the cake and rosettes on top where the strawberries are placed. This was the first time I made this cake, and they all loved it so I am adding it to the menu.

I would make my niece a birthday cake every month for her birthday. So this is an old cake but i really love it and wanted to share it. I made two one square and one round. They are both chocolate cake with jam in the middle. I used MMF (marshmallow fondant) to cover the cakes as well as add the decorations. I also used cookie cutters to cut out all the shapes and used a little bit of water with sugar to attach the cutouts to the cake. This cake was really moist and delicious. My niece smashed her little hands all over the cake! Shes too cute.
